MEATHEAD Racing Continuess to Dominate Spec Miata
Endurance Races |
|
|
In the SSM #43 the team of Brian Billey, Tim
Jacobs and Neil O’Rourke backed up their VIR
13hr performance with another win at the
12hr at the Point. After a strategic last
minute pit stop the crew was able to get the
car back on the track before the race got
black-flagged due to a severe thunderstorms.
On a wet track and only car length ahead of
the second placed car Neil was able to stay
in the lead over the next 90min. In the end
the team bested all of the competing Miatas
(SSM, SM, ITA, ITS and ITE) with a 6th place
overall finish. Look for this trio to
continue their win streak, and defend their
title at the VIR 13hr in October.
Other notable MEATHEAD Racing team
performances include Ed York and Mike
Collins in car #75, and the team of Guardian
Angel Motor Sports in ITS #21. Both cars
retired due to mechanical issues. The
Guardian Angel Motor Sports ITE #95 MX-5
unfortunately had to leave the competition
due to an incident with the tire wall in
turn three.
None of this could have been done with out a
great performance of the experienced
MEATHEAD Racing Crew, led by Gregg Downer
and Sherise Smouse. A shout out to George
Downer, Jim Toland, Chris Tamburo, Mike
Monahan, Bernie Mac, Julie Bradfield, Greg
Obadia, Fred Cocca, Ric Paplopski, Andrew
Link, Zack Lockett, Matt Jackson, Lee York,
T J Houston and Glenn Murphy for first class
pit stops, and to Wendy Collins, Karen
Dildei, Christina Jacobs, Sonya Billey and
Nickie O’Rourke for taking care of crew and
drivers all weekend.

RESULTS from 12 Hours at the
Point - WOW, what an effort
put on by the team drivers and crew
at MEATHEAD Racing. The 12 Hours at
the Point is a grueling race one
time around the clock with some of
the stiffest and well funded
competition from across the country
making the trip for a chance at
glory. MEATHEAD Racing fielded two
teams this year with the veteran
endurance team of Mike “MEATHEAD”
Collins, “Bad” Al Bell, Ed “51 Cent”
York with a special guest appearance
from Bruce Shelton driving the
number 12 SM and our rookie
endurance team of Brain “I have
labels on EVERYTHING in my trailer”
Billey, Tim “Waterboy” Jacobs and
Devin “Chicks dig me” Cates racing
the 13 SSM. If the drivers do
their
job and “just make laps” they may
have a chance, team DTR (Driver Team
Representative = Crew Chief) Gregg
Downer kept telling everyone. If
“we do our job” they can win. Gregg
led the MEATHEAD Racing crew to some
of the best pit stops in the entire
race, they were on a mission and it
showed!
While our rookies may be rookies to
endurance racing, they are certainly
not rookies to the SSM car they were
racing or the track they were
racing on. At one point in time,
they had a 3 lap lead on the closest
class competition. A little bit of
unfortunate luck put them behind the
wall for a big hammer fix and quick
alignment and then they were right
back in the mix. It was just a little too
far back to make a run for the win.
The veteran drivers had a rough
start getting a flat on the second
lap of the race forcing an
unscheduled stop, putting the team down
two laps right from the get go. A
fast lead off session, followed by
super steady driving gradually put
the 12 SM car to class and overall
lead on two different occasions.
With only 12 minutes to go, it looked
like the 12 car would win the entire
race and class victory. Then we ran
out of gas. A quick pit stop and a
few more lap and the veteran team
finished 4th overall and
2nd in class.
None of this could have been done
without the hard work and dedication
of George Downer, Jim Toland, Chris
Tamburo, Mike Monahan, Ryan Podmore,
Bernie Mac, Julie Bradfield, T J
Houston, Karen Dildei, Sherise
Smouse, Wendy Collins, Tim Kress,
Randy Ramos and Terry.
